Thread: 1999 WJ 2wd - what type trans fluid?

My wife and I just got a 99 wj 2wd 4.0 and the trans fluid was low. the dip stick says mopar ?? or dexronII. Searching on the net shows atf+3 or atf+4. I topped off with dexron II but should I change fluid and use something else?

ehhhhh I dont think you should use dexron II. I believe there was an issue with the manufacturer of those dipsticks and some actually say dextron II when I dont believe you should use that. Use atf+3 or 4. I think dextron II or III is used for transfer cases. If you topped it off it may not be that big of a deal but I would flush it with some new fluid if you have the time and want some piece of mind.

David, thanks for the reply. I used my search foo on the net and found more info saying what you said. I am going to drop the pan and replace the filter and change at least that much fluid. I think I only used about 1/2 maybe alittle less than a quart.
