How greedy can I get? (SWR question)

I finally got my CB wired up and my antenna wire routed. I started tuning my antenna today (K40 base loaded)
After trimming a bit off the whip I am able to get 1:1 on channel 1 and 1.4:1 on 40. Should I try (or be able) to bring that 1.4:1 on ch40 down or leave it where it is? The antenna is mounted at the back of the hood line near the corner of the windshield on a metal bracket. I cleared the paint on the body and bracket before mounting it to get the best ground I could get.
BTW this is on an 83 Wagoneer Limited.

    1.4 is fine. I'm running 1.3, 1.4, 1.5 (1,20,40) and it works great.

you should try and have channel 1 and channel 40 the same. might be able to get both to 1.2 possibly. see how you are around channel 20 if you get channel 20 to 1:1 that will give you the best coverage of the band as your swr will rise slightly towards either end as opposed to how it is now where it rises more as you go up the band.

Good enough is good enough. What happens when you cut it too short ?

Your SWR gets higher and your back where you started from but it's harder to add wire vs cut it off. I'd leave it alone.
