Who has welded an AMC 20 axle

I'm looking for some insight from those who have had, or those who have done it. Welding on the axle for either adding a truss or welding the tubes to the center section. Looking for tips or precautions such as drain the oil or not (for the welding session), using nickel rods or wire, pre-heating cast or not, etc.
I won't be doing this personally but I will be having it done to mine in the near future and I'd prefer it done correctly without any ooops'es or ooh sh!t's.

You can leave the oil in the axle. Some suggest to support the jeep by the frame to take the load off the axle. I have my axle on jack stands so didnt apply. I heated up the areas I was going to weld to 200 degrees F and welded making sure I didnt exceed 400 degrees F. My temps never really got above 350. I used 4, 1 inch welds so that the tube and housing still have some wiggle room since they expand and contract differently.
