    HELP!!! 82 cj7 fuel tank ???

Working on getting the 82 CJ7 back on the road. I pulled the fuel tank today to see what's going on. PO(brother) said it has a leak and he didn't fix it.

Everything went pretty smooth except one bolt and it was spinning in the frame with no access. I finally was able to hammer and cold chisel the head off. It would have been nice to have a compressor and air chisel

From searching it appears to be the factory 20 gallon optional tank. It is completely encased in the steel skid plate. The manufacture date stamped in the top is 9/81 so I think it's the original tank. Were the original ones poly??? because this one is.

Back to the problem ...... now that I have it dropped how do I get the tank out of the skidplate. I tried to get al lof the crud and built up dirt cleaned out, tried putting a bar and rope in one of the holes to give me pulling leverage, I even tried to "gently" pry bar the sides slowly to get it to seperate and lift. NOTHING worked.

There should be a strap that goes over the top of the fuel tank. It has a pin on one side a bolt on the other. Remove the bolt and the strap lifts off.

Just keep on it....it'll come. In the past I've had to pressure wash between the sides of the tank and the skid, then flip it upside down and support the skid with blocks of wood and beat on the bottom of the skid, then flip it over and have a buddy hold it while I yard on it.....eventually it came out. I think I even tried pullling on the rubber isolator pad betwen the tank and skid, that might have helped.

The thing that probably helped the most was whacking the skid with a rubber mallet all over the place. It helped loosen up the crud in the skid.
